Surgical procedure of prominent ear

The surgery is performed in the operating room under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. This procedure is carried out by cutting the skin in the area behind the ear , thena part of the skin and ear cartilage is removed and finally the main ear cartilage is sutured to several areas of tightened tissue on the back of ear.

Some colleagues just remove the excess skin , do not remove the excess cartilage and do not suture it to main part of ear.In most cases, this type of surgery, will be returned to the past status.

The preferred method in this type of surgery is to remove a part of the cartilage.

After the surgery the incision is closed by absorb able suture and dressing will be remained for 48-72hours. But Dr. SoofiZadeh recommends his patients to use headband for 4 weeks to avoid damaging the ear surgery.

• Are there any age restrictions for who can undergo surgery?

This procedure should be performed on children beginning at age five. The reason for performing the procedure at age five is two-fold. One, the children’s ears have developed by this age. Two, the children enter grade school at this age and may be teased or picked on. Having the surgery before entering grade school will avoid this situation. This procedure is performed on healthy adults that have protruding ears.

• Is there the possibility of return to first position after surgery?

It depends on your surgeon and his experience. Some surgeons just remove the excess skin , do not remove the excess cartilage and do not suture it to main part of ear. In most cases, this type of surgery, will be returned to the past status.

No ,the surgery is performed only on the outer ear and not have any adverse effects on hearing.

The purpose of surgery is to reduce the angle between the ear and skull but by laying down the auricle , the ear would appear smaller and more natural.

• How to fix cauliflower ear caused from wrestling?

Cauliflower is usually due to blunt trauma to the ear. When the cartilage of the ear is injured by trauma or inflammation ,it will be corrected by surgery if they refer to surgeon quickly. But after long time it will be somewhat modified.
